The driving force behind computers with Microsoft left Harvard in 1975, but uses his personal fortune to give charities and college scholarship funds with billions of dollars.

Millennium program Gates »Scientists began with a grant of 1 billion U.S. dollars from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, 1999. The GMS provides scholarships and financial aid for minorities seeking higher education and excellence. Minorities supported by the GMS include:

    * African American
    * American Indian
    * Alaska Natives
    * Asian American and Pacific Islander
    Hispanic Americans *

Students must demonstrate financial need and academic promise and leadership. Scholarships encourage students especially those who express interest in the field of library science, public health, mathematics, engineering and education. These fields are all that largely underrepresented within the U.S., the Institute believes that students entering these disciplines aim should be supported to help build a stronger infrastructure for the future.
How to apply

Students interested in applying for the scholarship and grant opportunities from the GMS or the Gates Foundation should visit their respective websites. Deadlines for applications is usually January before the academic year requested. For example, students interested in a scholarship or grant for school year 2010-2011 will be valid until January 2010. The application process includes submitting essays detailing why the applicant would benefit from the scholarship and how to use their education to improve the lives of others. Students should demonstrate leadership and academic excellence with plenty of dedication of public works, community service and good grades. The foundation works to provide full scholarships to support more than 27,000 students to go ahead.
